Plot summary: Pete is a pirate boy who rows his bus boat to go to PS 1, Pirate School 1 that is. At Pirate School the students learn how to be good pirates from their teacher Captain Bones. But Pete and another student Gregory Grimes, nicknamed Grimy, don't get along. Captain Bones suggests they fight it out but neither knows who won. Next Captain Bones suggests they go on a big treasure hunt, he tells the boys that X marks the spot, and sends them off. At the same time Pete and Grimy find the treasure on an old shipwreck. They begin to fight for it when they end up getting stuck in the bottom of the old ship. They have no way of getting out. They must work together to get out. Grimy stands on the treasure and lifts Pete out. Then Pete sends down a rope to bring the treasure up with. Pete realizes that he could leave Grimy stuck and have the treasure to himself, but he does the right thing and sends the rope back for Grimy and they decide they will share the treasure equally. | Strong vocabulary: The vocabulary in this book is fairly simple. The words though are multi-syllable and compound words that will take some sounding out by the reader because they may not be sight words (for example: treasure, breakfast, trapped, and suddenly). Figurative Language: There is very little figurative language but one use of onomatopoeia. When Pete and Grimy fall down in the old shipwreck the word "CRASH" is capitalized and in italics. That indicates it is meant to be said like a crash sounds. Relationship of Pictures to Words: The pictures and words have a complementary realtionship with each other. The words enhance the pictures and for beginning readers the pictures help to provide more understanding to the words. Themes/Central concepts:
