Plot summary: Amanda and Emily are best friends and they always wear pink tutus. They do everything together but it is time to audition for the role of Clara in the the Nutcracker ballet and only one will get it. They decide that they can't be friends on the day of the audition, but the two girls realize friendship is more important and purposefully mess up their auditions. In the end they are granted the roles of snowflakes which is better because they get to wear tutus together. Series:
| Strong vocabulary: The ballet teacher's name is Ms. Yvonne. This would be an uncommon name for most children but it relates to the stereotype that most ballerinas are Russian so the teacher has a Russian name. Figurative Language: There is the use of repetition to build vocabulary and to get each point across. For example "We wear pink tutus to school. We wear pink tutus to the store. We even wear pink tutus to go roller skating". Relationship of Pictures to Words: This book has a complementary relationship between pictures and words. The words enhance the pictures, if it were just pictures some of the thoughts and emotions that the words give would be left out. Themes/Central concepts: The theme of this book is friendship. Friendship is very important and a part in a dance, play, etc is not worth losing a friend over. Uses for this book: In early elementary school this was my favorite book. I was a dancer and could relate to wearing pink tutus dancing with my best friends. I think this fits very well for young girls because the two main characters are girls and it will help teach about friendship. |
