Prompts: Plot Summary: This is a story about the first day of school. Elizabeth is getting ready for the first day of school and is so excited, but when she gets there she is a little unsure about it. That is until she meets boy who is also scared and nervous. They become friends and in the end they both love school and can't wait to come back. Artistic Medium: This book appears to be done in water colors and paints. The colors are light shades so not to make anything to harsh. The book is trying to make school seem comforting and thats what light calm colors do. Style: This book is a realistic cartoon style book. The images are cartoons that are trying to look realistic and like real people. | Strong Vocabulary: The vocabulary in this book is simple but there are a few words in italics that are meant to stand out. For example hate (when Elizabeth says she hates school) to really show her feelings, and okay (at the end when she says school was okay) to show a bit of sarcasm because school was actually really good. Figurative Langauge: There is no real use of figurative language in this book. The book is written very straight forward. Relationship of Pictures to Words: The pictures and words have a complementary relationship. The words tell the story and the pictures just go one step forward in showing more detail. Themes/Central Concepts: The theme of this book is that everyone has nerves before the first day of school, you are not alone and it will end up being okay. Uses for this book: When I was going into preschool my mom got me this book and would read it to me to help ease my nerves. This is the perfect book for parents/guardians to read to their children before they start preschool or kindergarten. Or the teacher could even read it to the class on the first day. |
